George Nelson Ball Clock
George Nelson Ball Clock
Our iconic Ball Clock made in 1949, is one of more than 150 clocks attributed to architect, designer and writer, George Nelson. Wow, such an underachiever that guy! However, it appears, that even though George got all the credit for this one, it is rumored that this particular clock was actually the result of four guys at a bar doodling clock designs on drafting paper and each one pushing the other out of the way to add their ideas. They all left the bar tired and too drunk to remember or care about the effort. When Nelson returned to the bar to reclaim the roll of paper, he fell in love with one particular sketch and no one seems to remember whose it was. “It definitely wasn’t mine”, he said. Their best guess was it had been sketched by Isamu Noguchi.
Well, hats off to ingenious design wherever and however it happens. The origins of this clock are as unique and quirky as its design and that’s why it’s one of our Uniques of a Kind. Just looking at this clock makes you smile… and on top of that it will actually give you the time of day!
