Hella Jongerius Red White Vase
Hella Jongerius Red White Vase
This coveted piece of art is by a renowned Dutch designer, Hella Jongerius……it was done as a series in other vivid colors, although the red was the 1st and the most famous. What I love is the contrasting lacquer bright red color which she places over the unglazed matte porcelain. In her unique process she leaves 3 vertical seams showing it was peeled away from a much larger mold. At the bottom of the piece in navy is her crest and name and as an even more important symbol at the top in the red lacquer is a raised rectangle with what appears as an oversized thumbprint with M18 T280 C below. I can imagine the thumbprint represents that It was originally done by hand and then put into an industrial process. The New York Times design critic, Alice Rawsthorn, mentions Jongerius' greatest achievement is to have introduced ambiguity and sensuality to the clinical culture of Industrial design. What I love is that we can own these extremely collectible art pieces and enjoy them in our homes as Jongerius’ work is admired in permanent museum collections worldwide.
