"Composicion" by Joan Hernandez-Pijuan
I have to admit I discovered Joan Hernandez-Pijuan in an editorial in Elle Décor. I was instantly drawn to the simplicity and colors in the art piece mixed in a beautiful room. Wanting to know more about him, I discovered he was a Spanish painter who later taught at the University of Barcelona (deceased). He was passionate and did not conform to art movements or trends but employed abstraction, primitivism and expressionism. What I like about this engraving is the color and the shadows that are created by the lines measured in minuscule distances horizontally and then cross hatched. You can see these close up, but standing back the lines blur together creating an explosion of yellow in different degrees almost like radio frequencies. Pijuan has an extensive collection of engravings as well as paintings he has left behind….which are so fresh and bold. One can find his work at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona as well as countless other museums and galleries.
