Purvis Young “Dancing Angels #1

$390.00

This Outsider Art piece resembling 4 figures as though finger painted on a piece of ruled notebook paper is called “Dancing Angels #1” by Purvis Young.  It’s rhythmic shapes are typical of Young’s paintings which he repeats in many of his works.  Being a self taught artist in Miami, Florida he absorbed books and documentaries about Picasso, van Gogh and other impressionist as well as the Great Depression and Western Art.  During the period this painting was produced he was in the middle of his career and painting on the walls or nailing up images on boarded up storefronts or alleys.  This garnered attention from millionaire Bernard Davis the owner of the Miami Art Museum and he became a patron of Young’s and his collecting made him an instant success and he was bought by celebrities and included in some very influential art museums and galleries such as the Smithsonian and in 2018 Art Basel/Miami Art week and an entire floor of the Rubell Collection was dedicated to Young’s works.  Young died in 2010 with a reputation of being one of Miami’s iconic artist. I like Young’s work because of it’s rawness and rhythm and that it helps to create interest in any interior you might use it.
